Death toll in China from heavy rains
Over 160 people have died due to heavy rains and floods in China, with four more flood-related deaths reported from Sichuan province since Wednesday.
Four people died yesterday morning in the flood-affected Liangshan Yi autonomous prefecture in southwest China's Sichuan province, Xinhua news agency reported on Thursday.
Rainstorms have caused landslides in Dechang, Meigu and Jinyang counties of the province.
Five people were seriously injured in the storms, while 49 houses were wrecked, the report said.
Local transport and telecommunication facilities were also damaged, it said, adding that rescue work was underway.
Meanwhile, a report from Hefei, capital of south China's Anhui province, said the water level in the flooded Huaihe river, one of the country's major rivers, continues to rise.
It is estimated that around 12,000 hectares of farmland would be submerged by the waters of the river. Around 15,000 local residents, who would have been directly affected by the diversion of the river waters, were evacuated.
