Death toll rises to 25; lower Assam hard hit by flood

Assam reeled under the worst-ever floods in recent times claiming 25 lives so far as the water of the Brahmaputra and its tributaries continued to wreak havoc in 23 of the 26 districts in the State, official sources said.

Five people were washed away on Monday night in Goalpara district where the situation deteriorated during the last 24 hours while three others died in Kokrajhar district when the boat in which they were shifting to a safer place capsized at Panijani village, the sources said.

Another person, identified as Jyotish Mal Sarmah, was drowned in the flood waters of Kamrup district on Tuesday.

Road and rail communication in Nalbari, Barpeta, Baska, Chirang and Kokrajhar districts of Lower Assam were disrupted with the seepage in the reservoir of Krusho Hydel Project in Bhutan creating havoc in these areas.

In the worst-affected Nalbari district, water levels of the Brahmaputra, Morapagladiya and Nona rivers were flowing above the danger level and all villages in the district were submerged, the sources said.

Road communication to Nalbari from all sides remained disrupted affecting more than 6.5 lakh people in the district.

Kalanadi bridge connecting Assam and Bhutan has been washed away with the marooned people in Sapatch, Tamulpur and Darranga being evacuated by the Army.
