AS THE new academic session is set to begin in the Banaras Hindu University, the demand for restoration of the students union has started gaining momentum in Asia’s largest residential university.

As part of their efforts to ensure restoration of students union, the former and present students of BHU would take out a cycle rally under the banner of Kshatra Kalyan Morcha from BHU main gate on Tuesday to garner support for their demand from a cross section of society.

Talking to mediapersons here on Sunday, student leaders of BHU Bhuvaneshwar Dwivedi, Ajit Singh, Rajnish Singh and Yogesh Rai of Kshatra Kalyan Morcha said that the main objective of this rally was to garner support for restoration of the students union and expose the dictatorial attitude of the university administration.

These leaders said that the rally would cover Harishchandra Degree College, DAV Degree College, Sampurnanand Sanskrit University, UP College, Kachehari and Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth and generate awareness about the need for students union in BHU.

Referring to the recent fee hike and commencement of evening clinic at Sir Sunderlal Hospital in BHU where consultancy fee is charged Rs 200 per patient, these student leaders alleged that such anti-student and anti-social steps were against the spirit of the foundation of this university.

“BHU’s founder Mahamana Pt Madan Mohan Malviya had established the university for the most deprived section of the society but the recent fee hike and increase in consultancy fee would deprive of the poor populace of education and medical facilities in BHU”, they alleged.

They said that the students union was lying defunct for the last 10 years in BHU so that the administration might carry out its dictatorial policies without any protest.

It may be noted that various students outfits such as National Students Union of India, Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad, All India Students Association, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Youth Brigade have been demanding restoration of students union in BHU since a long time.
