AS MANY as 800 students of the three dental colleges in the City, specially final year students, are facing anxious moments as the exam results have been delayed by almost two to three months this time.

The last theory paper of the final year BDS exam was held on October 16, while the papers for the first three years were over much before that with the first year exam finishing on September 19 itself. With the results not declared as yet, the students are facing various problems.
For instance, the final year students, according to Dr Amit Malakar of Government Medical College, are getting delayed in starting internship. This will lead to cumulative delays for future plans too.
Claiming that the irregularity had crept in since past two years, chairman of Dental Student welfare Association of Madhya Pradesh Dr Chandresh Shukla said, “Last year students had agitated for early declaration of results. We had even started a hunger strike. But ultimately, when the result was declared, it was very poor - a sort of vindictive action by the concerned authorities. So no students are willing to agitate this time fearing poor marks.”
According to Dinesh Patidar of College of Dental Science and Hospital, Rau, “If the results are declared late, students get less time to send revaluation requests and even revaluation results come out late, which leads to confusion in students whether they would be able to appear for the next year exam or not.”
The students who are not able to garner marks up to their expectations generally apply for revaluation and if one is declared pass, that student is allowed to appear for the next year’s examination, held twice a year, generally in March and September. But when the results are declared late, the whole process gets delayed and there always is a chance that a student may lag behind his peers by at least six months to one year.
There are three dental colleges in the City, all affiliated to Devi Ahilya Vishwa Vidyalaya (DAVV). The Government Dental College has a batch of 40 students (total 160), the College of Dental Science and Hospital (Rau) has 60 students in each batch (total 240), while the Modern Dental College has 100 students each year (total 400) putting a total of 800 students’ future in jeopardy.
Dean of Faculty Dr Deshraj Jain admitted that there had been a delay in declaration of results this year but quickly added, “We are hopeful the final year result would be declared on Thursday and the rest would come out next week.”
Citing delay in practical exams as the reason for overall delay, he also said, “a few of the papers were sent out for checking as there were no external available. But, now almost all procedures are over and we are hopeful, the results would start coming in from this Thursday.”
