DIESEL LOCOMOTIVE Works (DLW) general manager Ravindra Sharma called upon engineering students to join the core sector and develop eco-friendly technology.

He was addressing the inaugural function of the Mechanical Engineering Society at the Institute of Technology (IT) in Banaras Hindu University (BHU) here on Tuesday evening.
“I also note with concern from the feedback given by companies that students are not serious in joining the core sector, or bluecollar jobs, even if comparable salaries are offered to them,” he said, adding, “This is certainly not a good sign.”
“Mechanical engineering is an evergreen branch, which also offers challenges.
Turbine blades, gear boxes, castings, analysis of stresses, fluid and thermal engineering problems, dual power plants, automobiles, aerospace engineering and railway engineering are the backbone of a country,” he added.
“These technologies will only be acceptable to society in 2020 for production process, the design, materials, conservation of energy etc.,” he said.
He said the society had to play a vital role in bridging the gap between academic and creative needs of students.
“Such groups can contribute a lot as they are quite informal and promote the cause of self-learning and mutual learning,” he said.
Head of Mechanical Engineering Department Prof SK Sharma welcomed the guests. Prof M Prasad proposed a formal vote of thanks. Former Society chairman Prof RS Singh was felicitated on the occasion.
