Dinesh Karthik first came into limelight while playing the under-19 World Cup in Dhaka in 2004. His 70 runs off 39 balls against Sri Lanka was the talking point of the tournament and came for for high praise from team coach Robin Singh.
As a 17-year-old playing his first season in 2002, he showed glimpses of his batting talent but his wicket-keeping wasn’t up to the mark and he was dropped for the Ranji Trophy knock-out matches.
Karthik made his Ranji Trophy debut for Tamil Nadu.
His impressive performance in under-19 World Cup, the Ranji Trophy knock-out and an improved showing behind the stumps resulted in him getting picked in the Indian one-day squad, as replacement for Parthiv Patel, in August 2004 for NatWest Challenge.
Very recently, in Mumbai he made his Test debut against Australia in the fourth Test of the India-Australia series.
