THE DEMON of dowry openly raised its ugly head once again in the city. Once again a marriage was broken simply because the bride’s family could not meet the greedy demands of the other side.
The girl and her family, hailing from Muzaffarpur in Bihar and in the city since June 2 for the marriage, had spent thousands of rupees on the arrangements for the marriage. Narrating his woes, bride’s brother Nalini Ranjan, told HT, “The wedding was to take place on June 7 at a banquet hall in Vikas Nagar, but as we were unable to pay the hefty dowry, the groom’s side never showed up.They had earlier demanded Rs 4.30 lakh, which we gave them but then a few days later they asked for Rs 3.30 lakh more.
Since we were unable to pay, the groom’s father Ramasrey Singh broke the marriage.”
Ramasrey works in Jal Nigam as a junior engineer and his son is employed as a sub inspector in the Central Industrial Security Force, Mumbai. They are residents of Rahim Nagar, Mahanagar.
