EC issues notice to Mizo CM for code violation

The show cause notice was issued to CM Zoramthanga for violating the model code of conduct in Phuldungsei assembly constituency.

The Election Commission on Thursday issued a show cause notice to Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga for violating the model code of conduct by announcing a road construction project in Phuldungsei assembly constituency where an assembly bypoll is scheduled on December 10.

In a letter to the Chief Minister, the EC said his promise to construct a metalled approach road to the village from the main road, if the independent candidate supported by his MNF party was voted, amounted to "violation of the model code of conduct".

"This was not only in violation of the model code of conduct but also amounted to electoral offence as defined in Section 171B of IPC", it said.

The Commission sought his comments by Friday.

Phuldungsei and Kawrthah assembly constituencies are going to polls on December 10.
