THE GOVERNMENT may claim that it has been spending enough money to make the 'Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan' a big success but, in fact, the scenario is not encouraging in the district.

Surprisingly, as many as 792 junior high schools in the district have no teachers at present. Besides, 109 schools are being run with the help of shiksha mitras (each school has a single shiksha mitra).

The Education Department sources said that 1883 posts of teachers at primary and junior high schools were lying vacant due to laxity of the officers concerned. As a result, the teaching work is badly affected at primary and junior high schools in the district.

The plight of education can well be gauged from these facts despite much hype being created on 'Education to All' programme, an ambitious project of the Ministry of Human Resource Development launched in collaboration with State Government.

Radheshyam, principal of a primary school in Holagarh development block, said that undoubtedly schemes like Mid-Day Meal, school building, text books and other materials had attracted more students in schools but in the absence of regular teachers, quality of education was suffering badly. Sources said that delay in filing up of vacant posts was a major reason behind the poor quality of education.

A sizeable number of teachers were getting retired every year while no fresh appointment had been made, said sources. Moreover, the district education officers are of the view that after the promotion granted to junior high school teachers, the exact picture would be clear to start the recruitment process.

When contacted Dr Krishna Mohan Tripathi, a prominent educationist and director of the State Institute of Education Management and Training said the Uttar Pradesh was adjudged the best by HRD Ministry in implementing the 'Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan' in the State. Dr Tripathi, who is also additional director, Basic Education, Uttar Pradesh, said that every effort was being made to improve the teaching quality.
