Just dare to step into Arts College and all your creativity will be frightened. “I have been in this college for almost 10 years. Classrooms haven’t been painted for decades,” says a teacher.
The Photography Department is one of the most badly affected departments. The Dark Room has a dark story to tell. The roots of a tree have penetrated in the room through the ceiling and the wall and now touch the floor. The administrative department had got it cleared a couple of times but they grow again.
“The dark room is the busiest room of the college,” says a staff member. But, the Crafts Section of the college is not in any better state. “We have informed authorities about the bad condition of the department a number of times but not much has been done about it. All the expensive machines lie under a thick layer of dust and dirt,” says a teacher.
One of the prestigious courses that the college offers is Art Master Training Course, the condition of which is also very bad. “Only two institutions in the country offer this course. The trained students go on to become art teachers. They should be taught in proper environment so that they can learn efficiently,” says a faculty member.
Talking about the dilapidated state of the college, Principal Arts College BN Shukla, says, “The grant is not sufficient to keep the college maintained. We get Rs 98 lakh yearly out of which Rs 88 lakh goes in salaries of the employees and the rest Rs 10 lakh goes in expenses like electricity bills, phone bills and stationary.
Also we have only four sweepers, which are obviously not sufficient to keep the college clean. We require at least four sweepers more.” However, with an additional grant of Rs 77 lakh from the government, the college is definitely going to be improved, says he.
