FOR THE first time in the State the environmental studies has been made a compulsory subject for the junior high school students from the forthcoming academic session.
The State Institute of Education here has prepared the text books on environmental studies for class 6th, 7th and 8th as per directives of the Supreme Court.
Principal of State Institute of Education, Dr Sutta Singh told HT Allahabad Live on Saturday that special focus had been given on water conservation, rain water harvesting and restoration of water ponds. With this students would now be able to grasp easily the importance of water conservation considering the crisis in several parts of the country. All chapters have been readied with pictures and diagrams .
Teachers too, Dr Singh said, would teach students the practical works on rain harvesting and recycling of water. Several methods like provision of rain water harvesting in buildings in urban areas and its use have been clearly mentioned in 7th standard text book. In rural area we can conserve rain water in wells, ponds and dams which can be used for irrigation purpose, said the principal.
Standard 8th text book talks about how to stop wastage of water in homes, schools and at public places, immediate repairs of water leakage, renovation of traditional wells, ponds and other water reservoirs. She stated these books would certainly bring a change in the attitude of our students at junior high school level that would ultimately prove a boon in future as far as water conservation was concerned. These books are set to create an awareness among students considering the water crisis in major cities in the state.
Apart from this environmental studies books for all classes contain the chapters on natural resources , natural imbalances, calamities, environmental pollution and protective measures.
