Ganguly eventually made 142 off 125 deliveries — 96 of the runs coming off boundaries. His half-century came off 59 balls and the 100 in exactly 100 balls. Sadly, Ganguly’s blazing attack could not save Glamorgan from its sixth defeat in seven matches but it did help avert an innings defeat against Kent.
Faced with Kent’s huge first innings total of 568, Glamorgan had managed 358, built largely on the back of identical 69s from Ganguly and David Hemp, but that still left them 210 behind.
In a sign of how seriously he takes his county stint as well as his growing confidence, Ganguly then studied his performance and told the video analyst to expect more runs from him in Glamorgan’s second innings.
Ganguly took the crease with Glamorgan tottering on 23 for four. Australian batting star Matthew Elliot was out for only eight, and the lively Kent quickie Amjad Khan had taken three wickets with only five runs on board.
Ganguly, in the company of Robert Croft, averted completed humiliation with a partnership of 44 runs before Croft fell for 33, made off 32 balls. Thereafter, the Indian captain steadied the Glamorgan innings with a 100-run partnership with fast bowler Darren Thomas, who scored 17 runs in an hour.
Ganguly at one stage seemed to be running out of partners, but an innings defeat was averted thanks to his last-wicket partnership of 80 in 11 overs with Andrew Davies.
