The private hospital conducted cataract operations on over 30 people last week and 16 of them developed post-operative complications like problem in vision and pain in the eyes, Nellore District Collector K Ramgopal told PTI over phone.

Following the complications, the hospital shifted the patients to hospitals in Chennai and Vijayawada.

The "globe" of four persons in one eye has been removed and 11 are undergoing treatment, the Collector said.

The official said a team of doctors has conducted an enquiry into the incident and that necessary action would be initiated soon.

Meanwhile, sources in the hospital said the complications have occurred due to infection and that there was no negligence in conducting the operations.

"This is an unfortunate accident. There can be several reasons for the infection. There was no negligence on the part of the doctors. We feel extremely sad over the incident. We took the patients to Chennai for further treatment," they said.
