Filing of nominations ends

IT WAS money and muscle show on the last day of the filing of nomination papers for civic bodies elections. Ten nomination papers were filed for the post of mayor on Friday. Prominent among those who filed their nomination papers were Congress candidate Ramesh Gupta, BJP candidate Anju Chaudhary and head of law department, DDU Gorakhpur University Prof Anirudh Prasad.

IT WAS money and muscle show on the last day of the filing of nomination papers for civic bodies elections. Ten nomination papers were filed for the post of mayor on Friday. Prominent among those who filed their nomination papers were Congress candidate Ramesh Gupta, BJP candidate Anju Chaudhary and head of law department, DDU Gorakhpur University Prof Anirudh Prasad.

On the last day, two dramatic changes were witnessed. Ramesh Gupta, a RSS cadre and senior BJP leader switched over his loyalty from BJP, joined Congress party and got the party symbol for mayoral election. The second significant incident, which astonished the people, was filing of nomination papers by Anirudh Prasad.

On Friday, large cavalcade of the candidates accompanied with political heavy weights reached district magistrate’s office to file their nomination papers. Anju Chaudhary, the BJP candidate was accompanied by BJP MP Yogi Adityanath while Congress candidate Ramesh Gupta reached district collectorate with district Congress president Sanjeev Singh state secretary of the party Dr Syed Jamal and other.

The other candidates who filed their nomination papers were Janardhan Singh (Rashtriya Lok Dal), Bindu Devi (Rashtriya Janata Dal), where as Diwaker Singh, Avneesh Prajapati, Dashrath Nishad and Praveen were independent candidates who filed their papers. With this, now there are 20 candidates in the fray for mayoral post. Besides, a huge rush was witnessed for filing of nomination papers for the post of corporator. Till date, 320 candidates filed their papers for corporators in 70 wards of the corporation. So far, 675 candidates for corporators are in the fray.

On Monday the papers would be scrutinise and October 12 would be the last day for withdrawal of nomination papers and then the actual number of the candidates for mayor and corporators in different wards will be clear.
