Five Maoists gunned down in Chhattisgarh

Five Maoist insurgents were killed in a shootout with a police team in Bastar region of Chhattisgarh late on Saturday evening, a top police official said.

Five Maoist insurgents were killed in a shootout with a police team in Bastar region of Chhattisgarh late on Saturday evening, a top police official said.

The shootout took place when the joint team of the Chhattisgarh police and Special Police Officers (SPOs) came face-to-face with a group of Maoists in a thickly forested area under the Bhairamgarh police station of Bijapur district, about 400 km south of in Raipur, according to Director General of Police Pawan Deo.

"We have recovered five bodies including four in the uniform of the banned Communist Party of India-Maoist. Some arms were also recovered from the insurgents," he said.

In another development in the Maoist-violence hit Bastar region, police unearthed a gun factory run by the rebels in Narayanpur district.
