Divisional Commissioner Anita Bhatnagar Jain administered oath of office and secrecy to Mayor Ravindra Patni at 5.26 pm. Later, Patni administered oath to 110 corporators amidst protest from Samajwadi corporators, who wanted to take oath in Urdu.

Chaotic scenes were witnessed when SP corporators started shouting slogans against the mayor demanding him to take oath in Urdu. Some of Samajwadi Party corporators even stood on chairs and raised slogans against the mayor, which was vociferously responded by BJP corporators with Jai Shri Ram and Vande Mataram slogans. The matter was resolved after the intervention of senior leaders present at the ceremony.

Speaking after taking oath, Patni promised to change the face of the city through his hard work. He vowed to make Kanpur a clean and green city. He urged the residents to deposit municipal taxes and well in time so that the financial situation of the corporation could be improved. He appealed to all the corporators cutting across party lines to work for the development of the city.
