'Poisoned country-made liquor' was allegedly served in two hooch dens at Sobaibandha and Chokihat areas in the heart of Jorhat town, from where the deaths are being reported since midnight, the sources said.

Those taken seriously ill were admitted to Jorhat Civil Hospital after they complained of vomiting and diarrhoea.

The deceased have been identified as Raju Deka (27), Bipin Bora (45), Debeswar Tati (45) and Sukan Tati (43).

After the incident, police broke down about 15 illegal hooch dens along the roads in the affected areas on Saturday morning and also destroyed hundreds of litres of hooch.
