THE INQUIRY ordered, following an expose in the Hindustan Times on December 4, has found four regional marketing managers (RMMs) of UP Handloom Corporation prima facie guilty of various irregularities.

A meeting to review the purchases made by the UP Handloom Corporation under the revival program was held at the chairperson’s office on January 30.
Chairperson Uma Kiran directed the MD to relive the RMMs of Mumbai, Dehradun, Bangalore and Barielly of their present posting with immediate effect. The four RMMs are RP Pal (Bangalore), Arun Shukla (Mumbai), PS Pandey (Dehradun) and BD Dubey (Bareilly).
The MD has been directed to seek explanation from them for making excess purchase for the corporation’s showrooms under the decentralised revival scheme. Besides, they have also been held responsible for poor sale in showrooms in their areas. When contacted, Kiran said she had issued instructions for disciplinary action against all four RMMs. When asked about type of action, she said that further action would be taken as per the process.
However, managing director Shyam Lal could not be contacted.
The Hindustan Times had highlighted several irregularities in the Handloom Corporation’s revival plan. HT had pointed out that the Corporation showed undue hurry in its revival programme and failed to adopt the norms for implementing the programme. Taking cognizance of the same, a probe was ordered on December 5. Later on December 24, the Hindustan Times again highlighted irregularities, this time regarding the purchase of products and poor sale. It was also projected that the goods purchased in the first phase were still laying in large quantity in showrooms. Whereas, second phase purchase had been allowed from December 25 by the corporation’s management.
Interestingly, the inquiry report had detected irregularities in showrooms, the same was also highlighted in HT on January 21. After carrying out inspection of showrooms, the inquiry team stumbled on the irregularities and ways guidelines were flouted in the revival scheme.
