Four years gone, Centre?s plan yet to take off in city

In compliance to the Central Government scheme the State Government had issued an order stating the construction of 1.25 lakh houses for slum dwellers in the state under the Valmiki-Ambedkar Malin Basti Awas Yojna. However the order has not been executed till date by the authorities concerned especially Nagar Nigam.
According to the State Urban Housing Development Ministry's order 1277/59/15 dated 29-06-2002 the Central Government has launched the Valmiki-Ambedkar Malin Basti Awas Yojna to undertake construction of the said houses for below poverty line and other economically weaker sections of the society by 2006 with a cost of Rs 500 crore.
The order said that land would be made available free of cost by Nagar Nigam to SUDA cell.
Ironically, the fixed time period is about to expire but no progress has been made so far.
Surprisingly, the NN officers were not aware of this order when former corporator Kamlesh Singh raised the issue a few days back.
In a letter addressed to the Administrator/District Magistrate and Municipal Commissioner Kamlesh Singh said slum area was one of the important aspects of urban development that was being neglected by the civic authorities. Census Report-2001 clearly pointed out that there was dearth of 7.24 lakh houses including 35 per cent for economically weaker sections in the state.
He asked the officials as to why the said scheme was not implemented in the city by the them.
Under the scheme around 1500 houses were to be constructed by Allahabad Nagar Nigam -- 50 per cent of them for SC/ ST , 30 % for Other Backward Classes, 15 % for other economically weaker sections and 3 % for physically disabled in the city .
Singh has urged the NN administration to provide the land free of cost for the said scheme at the earliest.
