G8 summit leaders have pledged to promote "open, transparent" energy markets in the world, according to a joint statement published on Sunday.

The Group of Eight countries including Russia recognized several key ideas for the functioning of global energy markets, including the principle that they be "open, transparent, effective and competitive," the leaders said in the statement.
