Gastro: 2 dead, over a dozen ill

The two persons died before they could undergo proper treatment at the Hamlet Hospital.
The residents put the blame on the suspected spread of gastroenteritis to the garbage dumping ground situated nearby that was being used by the Kanpur Municipal Corporation. A local BJP leader Basu Sharma said that with rainfall, foul smell had started emanating from the garbage dump.
According to reports, a 55-year-old tea-stall owner Lallan Gupta, who complained of vomiting and uneasiness on July 23, was rushed to the Hallet Hospital. However, he breathed his last before being admitted to the emergency ward.
Similarly, a 60-year-old woman and mother of Rajesh Dubey died on Monday after she was admitted to the Hallet Hospital with similar problems.
The residents said that since the area did not have either a primary health centre or a community health centre in its vicinity, the residents had to rely on doctors, some of whom were quacks.
They added that while the Kalyanpur PHC was located about six kilometers away, the Bithoor PHC was situated at a distance of 12 kilometres from Naramau.
The local BJP leader said that those who had fallen ill included Hanuman Prajapati (47), Manoj Shukla (30), Ravi Sharma (10) and his uncle Indradeo Sharma (40), Rakesh Sharma (35), Radhey Shyam Singh (60), Nitesh Verma (22), Sameer (10), Nitin (8), Jeetu (12), Siyaram (30), Vinod (15), Ashu (5), Saraswati (15) and Meena (6).
