Somebody asked me a long time back that if I had to choose between a BMW 5-series or the Mercedes E-class, which would be my favourite? My answer then was the same it is now – the Beemer.
After a lot of false starts and expected launch dates, BMW AG has announced firm plans to enter the market and one model that will form part of its entourage to India is the 530i. While a new shape has already been announced in Europe, it is this model which will first come in, followed by the new one sometime late next year.
The 5-series has always been the Mercedes E-class’s worst nightmare. The Beemer is generally perceived as more of a driver’s car of the two, a view endorsed by its powerful straight-six engine thumping out a whopping 231bhp.
This makes the car race from 0 to 100kph in under 8 seconds, and the 5-series could well be one of the fastest cars on Indian roads.
The best part is the fuel consumption. While the car I was driving was an automatic, and I kept the rev needle dancing all over the counter, she returned a very respectable 6.2kpl.
The 530i is currently undergoing homologation and should become available in the next few months. Expected to cost around Rs 38 lakh, the options list could be quite large. If you have the moolah, get ready to spend it as the ultimate driving machine is on its way.
