TAKE OUT your umbrellas and raincoats. The Metrological Department of the Chandra Shekhar Azad (CSA) University has forecast heavy rainfall in the city for the rest of the week. It says that the South-West monsoon is here and gusty western winds will cause rainfall in the city.
In the last 24 hours, 53 mm of rainfall has been recorded in the city. Despite humidity, the maximum temperature on Thursday was recorded at 32.6 degree Centigrade and the minimum temperature was recorded at 25.5 degree Centigrade.
The met department has also forecast decline in the maximum temperature in the next seven days but no considerable change in the minimum temperature has been predicated.
Talking to Hindustan Times, head of the Met Department Dr KC Kem said, “The South-West monsoon will cause heavy rainfall in the city in the next one week.” Overall, this monsoon would be good for the city, Dr Kem said. However, he added that during this period humidity would also increase.
The coming week would also bring respite to farmers of Kanpur Dehat, who have been eagerly waiting for the rainfall.
However, after the on-set of monsoon, Kanpur City and Dehat had not received rainfall as expected. The entire first half of July did not witness any torrential rain but the next one-week will fulfill all expectations of farmers.
But on the other-hand monsoon can spell doom for the district administration. Even the scanty rainfall till date resulted in waterlogging in all major parts of the city. The pre-monsoon preparation by the Kanpur Municipal Corporation (KMC), to prevent water logging, was exposed.
Before every monsoon intensive exercise of cleaning choked drains is undertaken by KMC officials. But, waterlogging has proved all such assurances as fake promises. The same story is going to be repeated this monsoon too.
Most parts of the city reported waterlogging leading to traffic jams and chaos.
Even a slight drizzle led to choked drains and waterlogging exposing claims of the KMC officials despite the fact that a substantial amount had already been spent on cleaning of drains by the KMC.
