This has reference to Shikha Mukerjee’s article The Centre court game (May 15). It would be folly on the part of the Left Front to assume a larger role at the Centre in view of their victories in West Bengal and Kerala. West Bengal has been a red bastion for quite some time and they have ruled Kerala off and on.

Had the Left broken fresh ground in other states, then it would have been a cause for worry to the Congress.

No pullout from LoC

Vikram Sood has rightly said that strategic advantage cannot be given up for some obscure short-term political advantage (Height of folly, May 11). Looking at the Pakistan army’s credibility in the past, withdrawal from Siachen without carefully delineated positions is not advisable. Besides, there is no need to withdraw from such a place of strategic importance. Sacrifices of our jawans should not go waste.

So what’s new?

The report Taliban say Surya was killed on ISI orders (May 15) is again part of evil designs of the ISI which really is no surprise. Denial by Pakistan is also per for the course. Pakistan has been conducting its terrorist activities not only against India but against the US as well. The world should alienate Pakistan for its double talk.

Where’s the sincerity?

Reservations in professions like medicine and engineering where one mistake can end one’s life, must be removed in entirety (Secession of the successful, May 12). If HRD Minister Arjun Singh is really concerned about OBC students, and not about vote bank politics, he should open new colleges and schools for such students and not plan moves that are nothing but political fishing.

The treatment meted out to medical students in Delhi and Mumbai is unfair. In a democracy, students have every right to raise their voice against State injustice. They do not deserve the barbaric behaviour they faced from the police force.
