BARKATULLAH UNIVERSITY basketball girls’ team is toiling hard for the last couple of days at the basketball court of Major Dhyanchand Grounds here to shine in the South- West Inter-University Basketball Championship scheduled from January 26 and All- India Inter-University Basketball Championship scheduled from February 3 on the same venue.
BU team members include Vinita Singh (captain), Poonam Singh, N Prasanna, Laxmi Jatav, Anita Masram, Priyanka Bhateley, Deepa Gaur, Priti Chauhan, Nisha Singh, Balinder Kaur, Deepika and Kusum Keer.
Daily practice of three to four hours has become routine for the girls. “Our first objective is to qualify for the all India championship and we are confident of success”, said skipper of the team Vinita Singh. She expressed satisfaction over preparations of the team.
On being asked about failure of the team in the last few championships, senior player Poonam Singh said the team has been good but at many occasions players took the match rather casually in the last minutes of the game that cost us matches.
However, this time round the team is focused on victory.
Poonam has been representing the team for the last four years. Coach of the team Upendra Singh Tomar said that the home ground support would play an important role. “Performing in front of the home crowd will surely make a difference for the team.
We are expecting good place from the team in the All India championship.” Regarding preparations of the team, another senior player N Prasanna said that the team is all set to prove talent in the championship. “We will be able to qualify for the All India championship. Coordination between players is good and preparation is going in the right direction”, said Prasanna.
LEVEL OF enthusiasm in the participating teams regarding the championship could be gauged from the fact that Bangalore team that arrived today went straight to the court for practice. “Such enthusiasm by the teams will make the contest interesting”, said BU director, sports Dr Akhilesh Sharma.
