This was a cricket match with a difference!

With an objective to bring smiles on the faces of the elderly, the Allama Iqbal Educational Society organised a cricket match at Beniabagh ground in Varanasi on Friday evening.

The society was organising Buzorgon Ki Chaupal, ‘Massoom Chaupal’ for the last six days.

It was interesting to watch when the elders, dressed in lungi, kurta, sherwani and topi, emerged on the Beniabagh ground. The surrounding areas of Beniabag is well known for football matches but this unique match had become a centre of attraction for the locals.

This friendly match presented a new face of Hindu and Muslim unity along with the image of typical Benarsi tradition. This match was played in artificial light.

The two teams were Massoom Eleven which was led by Hazi Shahabuddin, and Uttary Chaupal Eleven led by advocate Mewa Lal.

The team of Massoom Chaupal defeated Uttari Chaupal Eleven with a margin of 42 runs. Masoonm Eleven batted first and made 98 runs in eight overs. Massoom Eleven lost its all wickets.

After lunch, the team of Uttary chaupal batted and all were out in 56 runs.

This cricket match recalled memories of Aamir Khan’s movie, Lagaan. The dresses, playing style and enthusiasm among the players were as similar as Lagaan’s cricket team.

The enthusiastic approach of the elders hinted at the fact the elders had parted ways with loneliness. The grandsons and granddaughters boosted the morale of their grandfathers. A 72-year-old player Ramzan Miyan, was awarded with ‘man of the match’ award. He said he enjoyed much and his blessings was with the organisers of this Chaupal who made efforts in to bring smiles on the faces of the elderly.

Commentator of this unique cricket match and organiser of the chaupal, S Javed Ahmed said the blessings of the elders were imperative for the development of the country.

He said five persons had started this chaupal to keep the elders smiling. A football match of elders would be conducted on Monday.
