THE GOVERNOR’S office has sought an explanation from SGPGIMS in connection with the misuse of funds in purchase of medicines for patients.

The query came after a report was published in HT Lucknow Live on December 12, 2005 about medicine and medical equipment.

Special secretary of the Governor wrote a letter to the secretary in the Medical Education department on December 16, 2005.

Based on the query from the Governor’s office, deputy secretary in the Medical Education department Javed Ehtesham has demanded a reply from the SGPGIMS.

The department has demanded PGI to reply with details of the purchases and use of money. It may be mentioned that the audit report of PGI had mentioned several anomalies in purchase of equipment and use of medicines for patients.

Unnecessary delay in purchase of equipment up to several years and missing records about the use of money were mentioned at several places in audit report.

As per the report, the institute suffered a gross loss of Rs 4.58 crore due to non-compliance of rules while penalty of Rs 7 lakhs could not be recovered from defaulter. Moreover, in the report from the principal accountant general, it was stated that physical verification of equipment or the dead stock was never done. This was a serious flaw in the control system of the institute as items were not available for use for having being delivered elsewhere.
