Success and joy are co-related. And who would understand it better than Ashutosh Gowariker, who was in pursuit of success for quite sometime and triumphed when became a super duper hit. The film not only captivated Indian critics but the greatness and richness of Gowariker’s craftsmanship was appreciated and recognised by the international film connoisseurs as well. The young director was elated with joy when bagged the popular 'Prix Du Public' at Switzerland's Locarno film festival in 2001 and was nominated for the Best Foreign Film category at the Oscars in 2002.

Gowarikar's joyous journey continued with the honours he received at home. Lagaan was awarded the Best Film at the Star TV Screen Awards for 2001 and crowned with the Best Film and Best Story at the FairGlow Zee Awards. Lagaan’s enormous success catapulted this success-starved filmmaker into the leagues of big directors.

Some says that joy is like a mirage and it constantly eludes us but not in Gowariker’s case. It’s a continuous process for him and reached its Zenith when the board of governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences offered him the prestigious lifetime membership of the academy, which he accepted gracefully. He was thrilled to bits by getting the singular honour.

Right now all eyes are set on his upcoming film Swades; expectations are soaring high. One hopes he gets an opportunity to rejoice success once again and his joyous journey continues…
