The DoT, however, silent on the date of launch of MNP in other states. During the first phase, MNP was supposed to be launched in 11 circles.
MNP allows a subscriber to change his service provider, while retaining his number. Once, MNP is implemented the competition will increase and the quality of services is expected to improve.
Deadline for implementing MNP has been extended a number of times. The first deadline for MNP was December, 2009. It was extended to March, 2010 as operators were not ready for it. Later it was extended to June 30, 2010. The deadline was further extended to October 31.
On August 12, the minister of state for communications & information technology, Sachin Pilot, informed the Rajya Sabha that all the networks in the country had been technically upgraded for implementations of MNP except MTNL, which was in the process of upgradation.
