Here?s to the young spirit

GenNow not only loves to taste wines from different parts of the world, but there?s a growing interest to know more about the drink.

For 20-somethings, it’s become fashionable to be seen sipping wine. The GenNow brigade not only loves to taste wines from different parts of the world, but there’s a growing interest to know more about the drink.

Little surprise, the recent Chilean wine tasting do at the Oberoi, organised by The Wine Society, saw many youngsters try out Chardonnay, Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon.

“We are getting better wines in India now. The good old Indian Sula is not only a great wine but also quite affordable,” said Adarsh Kumar, who works with an NGO in Delhi. Ashwin Batra, a lawyer with the city-based Trilegal, added: “More people like me are getting hooked to wine because it is a lifestyle drink. Besides, it’s lighter and easier to drink than other spirits.”

Tarapaca Chardonnay, Tierra Carmenere, Paso Del Sol Merlot and Terra Mater Cabernet were among the wines that were served at the tasting session.
Said President of The Wine Society, Ghulam Naqshband: “French and Italian wines are popular. Now it’s time to explore wines from Chile and Australia.”
Chilean Ambassador Jorge Heine came with wife Norma. He was happy to taste the four reds and one white wine that were served before the snacks.

“Along with the tasting, it’s interesting to learn about wine and how to select them too. Whenever I dine out I prefer to have a glass of wine. There is a lot of variety when it comes to wine and it’s fun to try out various wines with different cuisines,” said Harvard post-graduate Sanaa Kumar, who was there with her friends Yamini Kumar and Avani Batra. While Batra hoped that more young people in the city would join The Wine Club, she added: “It would be ideal to interact about wine with more people of your age.”

Be it clubbing or just a quite dinner at a fancy restaurant, they sure are learning to raise a toast to wine. Here’s to the new spirit!
