The Delhi-Jaipur highway has taken many lives besides that of Saheb Singh Verma. The poor design of the highway is predominantly responsible for the mishaps. There is no separate track for two-wheelers, bicycles and pedestrians. The highway also passes through agricultural farms and fields and there is no way for cattle and farm vehicles to traverse it.

It is evident from the spate of road tragedies that the authorities concerned have not been able to deal with the problem of rash driving. The Blueline buses need to be substituted by a large number of smaller vehicles like RTVs which should ply on shorter routes and will not pose such a threat.

Party politics

New disclosures are surfacing daily in the case of presidential candidate Pratibha Patil. All
members of the electoral college should think twice before casting their votes as the national interest is bigger than the party’s interest.

Do we need a lady president simply to emphasise that we are concerned about women’s empowerment? Our politicians have previously come up with such petty arguments. They took pride in KR Narayanan being a Dalit rather than focusing on his achievements. Then they boasted about Kalam being a Muslim president only to prove our secular credentials. But the public would rather see a president of high moral stature.
