Kuhl
In the entire region of western Himalayas comprising Jammu, Himachal Pradesh and northern Uttarakand, kuhl is a standard water harvesting technique. In parts of Himachal Pradesh, a cut in made in the stream, which is further extended by stone embankment, generally made of a pile of stones.

Often, it goes on till several kilometers to reach the crop fields. In Uttarakhand, it is called guhl. In Nainital and Dehradun streams are dammed with the help of trees and branches and a channel diverted towards fields.
