The state Public Works Department (PWD) last month razed to ground the half-timbered decades old government building in the posh Brockhurst locality of the capital here. It was once a residence of ministers and government functionaries.

The new multi-storeyed building would be the official residence of Rajwant Sandhu, the chief secretary of the state, an official said.

"Ten houses can be built from the amount of the wood removed from the dismantled structure. Moreover, the wood is well preserved and is of top quality," a PWD official said.

The last occupant of the building was Viplove Thakur as a state Congress committee chief till 2007.
