How fair is UP Board evaluation work?

SEVERAL IRREGULARITIES were reported in the evaluation of answer-sheets of UP Board High School and Intermediate examinations at eight centres in the city. Though the Uttar Pradesh Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad had fixed 15-day period for evaluation work, but at some centres the answer-sheets of few subjects were checked within four- five days. Sources said this happened because in some subjects there were plenty of examiners while in others like computers, there were no teachers available to check the answer-sheets.

Sources said this happened because in some subjects there were plenty of examiners while in others like computers, there were no teachers available to check the answer-sheets.

At the Government Inter College evaluation centre, the Board had appointed nine deputy examiners and 83 assistant examiners to check only 2500 answer-sheets of Intermediate Biology examination. As a result, one examiner evaluated 30 answer-sheets only.

Similarly, for High School Hindi paper, a total of 41 deputy examiners and 293 assistant examiners were assigned for checking the answer-sheets.

Excess examiners were reportedly appointed this year. Contrary to this, the Board had to face a difficult situation because it failed to get examiners for computer and other subjects including Marathi, Kannada, Statistics, Tamil, Telegu , book-crafts, leather-craft etc.

Sources alleged these subjects were even not properly taught at colleges in absence of teachers even though the Board conducted exams for more than one dozen such subjects.

Ironically, even though Computers had been introduced with much hype in the UP Board syllabi, there were no well qualified teachers in majority of the colleges, particularly in non-aided colleges in the State.

Even in some subjects the enrollment of students was zero but the Board needed at least one examiner to open the question paper envelope during the examination.

At many centres in the State, fake examiners were able to check the answer-sheets despite strict instructions issued by the Board this year.

Board sources said at one evaluation centre in Jaunpur one deputy examiner had allowed fake examiners to check the answer-sheets after the teachers appointed by the Board were sent back.

On the direction of UP Board secretary Basudev Yadav, the DIOS had shifted the answer-sheets to another centre. Yadav said strict action would be taken against those centres from where complaints were received.

He admitted that more effective measures were required to maintain the sanctity of the evaluation work.

To recall, the evaluation work began from April 12 at over 200 evaluation centres in the State.
