MILLIONS OF units of power are going unaccounted in the city each month due to faulty procedure of distribution, leading to a major reason for power crisis in the city.

KESCo officials are grappling with the problem, as no solution seems to be in sight for bridging the gap between the electricity received from the UPPCL and thereafter supplied to the city.
In the current financial year, September is an apt example of the crisis haunting KESCo officials. During the entire month KESCo received 200.103 million units (MUs) of power from the UPPCL but due to distribution loss it could only supply 129.633 MUs to the city, resulting in acute power crisis for more than 16 hours.
The energy loss was reported from all the three circles and 15 divisions of KESCo.
However, circle III received 75.270 MUs during the month but only 43.302 MUs was supplied, resulting in a loss of 31.968 MUs in a single month.
Circle I received 69.069 MUs but it could supply only 40.993 MUs, thereby registering a loss of 28.076 MUs.
Circle II, which is the smallest circle, received 55.746 MUs but it could supply only 45.338 MUs, resulting in loss of 10.426 MUs.
Of all the 15 divisions, six reported more than 40 MUs of loss during the month. From circle I, Zaribchowki and Electricity House divisions reported 49.99 MUs and 49.49 MUs loss respectively. From circle III alone four divisions reported more than 40 MUs loss. Kidwai Nagar division reported 47.75 MUs loss, Naubasta division reported 45.38 MUs loss, World Bank Barra division reported 43.99 MUs loss and Govind Nagar division reported 43.20 MUs loss.
Six of the remaining eight divisions reported more than 33 MUs loss. From circle I Kalyanpur and Phoolbagh divisions reported 38.95 MUs and 39.08 MUs loss respectively. From circle II Ratanpur and Sarvodaya Nagar divisions reported 34.48 MUs and 33.20 MUs loss respectively.
From circle III Jajmau and Harish Ganj divisions reported 38.57 MUs and 37.42 MUs loss respectively. The minimum energy loss of 4.32 MUs was reported from the industrial division of Dada Nagar.
KESCo general manager MP Tripathi said: “Energy loss is a major problem for KESCo and efforts are being made to bring down this loss.”
Besides technical reasons, pilferage of power was also a major reason for energy loss, added Tripathi.
