Giving this information to mediapersons here on Monday, chief priest of Sankat Mochan temple Prof.

Veer Bhadra Mishra said that about 7,000 people, including school kids of 25 to 30 schools would participate to form a human chain.

“A seven-kilometre distance from Assi Ghat to Varuna river will be covered by the human chain on World Water Day”, he said and added that this function would be organised under the auspices of Sankat Mochan Foundation and Australia- based organization, Oz Green.

Prof. Mishra informed that the Sankat Mochan Foundation had been forming human chains on the ghats of Ganga on World Water Day for the last six years in Varanasi.

He added that the participants of the human chain would also renew their commitment to clean the Ganga.

He said that prior to this, a public meeting would be organised at Tulsi Ghat on the eve of World Water Day on Tuesday evening in which prominent speakers would highlight the reason and solution behind the rising pollution in the Ganga here.

“The main reason behind pollution in the Ganga in Varanasi is untreated sewage water,” he said and added that the scientists and experts of Sankat Mochan Foundation had prepared a plan which was accepted by the Varanasi Nagar Nigam.

The Ganga Action Plan, which was initiated by former Prime Minister Late Rajeev Gandhi, had proved to be incapable of checking the increasing pollution in this river in Varanasi, said Prof. Mishra, adding that the plan prepared by the Sankat Mochan Foundation would also be discussed in the meeting.

It may be mentioned that for the past several years, the Sankat Mochan Foundation has been working to check the rising pollution in the Ganga here.
The foundation had organised a seminar on Ganga recently in which more than a dozen Members of Parliament, including Union Minister of State for Labour Chandra Shekhar Shahu, MP of Samajwadi Party, Mohan Singh, BJP MP Balbir Punj, Congress MP Tariq Anwar, nominated MP Chandan Mitra and Congress MP Dr. Thokchom Meniya had expressed their concern over the increasing pollution in the Ganga.
