"My smile is from my dad.. the hair and eyes come from mum.. and the nose from some ancestor on either side," she informs with a laughing glance at the mirror. Here's Sonam Kapoor, up close and personal with Rachana Dubey...
You have plenty of antiques in your home.
(Chuckles) You like them? My mum collects them. She and maasi have done up the place. She's got great taste.
Did she buy the dress you're wearing?
No, Anamika Khanna has designed it for me. It's one of my favourites. I walked for her at the Lakhme Fashion Week, remember?
So did your dad, Anil Kapoor.
Yeah, he walked for Kunal Rawal, one of my oldest and closest friends.
You're pretty much the desi girl, aren't you?
So far, you've seen me in only two films.. and the look in both was traditional. But tomorrow, if I accept a movie which demands a more westernised look, I won't shy away from showing skin. But not just for the heck.
Buzz is that the release of Delhi 6 has been pushed back?
No, the movie is releasing this Friday.
(Smiles) I never get anxious, it spoils my mood, I lose sleep and it shows up on my skin. So, I'm staying cool. Masakali is already a hit.
I'm told you don't like being called Masakali.
No, I like it. It's cute!
Any reactions from AK?
(Smiles) Dad can't wait to see the film. He's told me that I carry off my Delhi 6 look quite well.
It's taken you a long time to move away from Saawariya's Sakina.
Please! She was just an imaginary sketch. Characters like her enter and exit from an actor's life everyday.
Your second release has taken more than a year coming along. Deepika Padukone, who debuted with you, has already had three releases and a special appearance.
Why should I copy anyone else's moves? I want to focus on one film at a time instead of juggling with five projects. I want to take it slow and easy. What is the point starting from No 1? Where do you go from there?
The industry's been kind to your Saawariya hero, Ranbir Kapoor.. but not so kind to you.
They did praise my acting abilities and comic timing. Saawariya may have flopped but for me, it will remain one of the most beautiful films I will ever be part of. And frankly, I don't much care for what others say.
Why hasn't Sanjay Leela Bhansali repeated you?
How does that matter? He continues to be my teacher regardless of whom he works with next. I talk to him at least five times a month. We meet up for lunch and hang around. He advises me and I take his suggestions very seriously. I've grown up from an assistant director to an actress under his guidance.
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan dropped in on the sets of Delhi 6 quite often to meet husband Abhishek. Did she give you a tip or two too?
Not really. But she's the most beautiful woman I have ever seen.
She must be upset you've replaced her as the brand ambassador of a popular hair colour brand. No?
I haven't replaced her. I agreed to endorse it because Aishwarya was attached with it. We are both part of the brand now.
Given the ongoing economic slowdown.. were you asked to take a pay cut?
Look around, everything is on sale.. 60 per cent off. (Laughs) Jokes apart, there have been no pay cuts.
Your take on Slumdog Millionaire which despite the international acclaim got a lot of flak back home.
Dad was superb as Prem Kumar. He's a great actor! I won't be with him at the Oscars but I'm sure the film will win an award or two.
Will he be hosting the new season of Kaun Banega Crorepati on Sony?
You will have to ask him that.
Emma which is being adapted by your father's production company, White Water Films, is supposedly one of your favourite Jane Austen novels.
It's too premature to talk about Emma.
Okay, let's talk about Come on Pappu in which you have replaced Deepika Padukone opposite Akshay Kumar?
I haven't replaced Deepika. The film was offered to me, I liked it and signed up. Period.
The grapevine has it that your brother, Harshvardhan, is going to be launched as a director soon.
Oh please, Harsh is still studying in the US.
Over the last two years, your equation with Ranbir Kapoor has changed.. especially after he started dating Deepika.
No way! We're still backslapping buddies and Deepika is his girlfriend. We hang out together.
Ranbir and Imran Khan are starting their own productions. Will you be part of them?
I'll do anything for Ranbir.. even a passing shot. We've been friends for years.. and years.
He's cute. You must have had a crush on him at some point?
I had a crush on Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar.. in that order. The crushes would change with their releases.
