The International Cricket Council's Event Technical Committee for the ICC Champions Trophy on Monday approved India's request to replace injured pace bowler Lakshmipathi Balaji with Amit Bhandari.

"Balaji has been ruled out of the tournament with an injured abdominal muscle and will be replaced by Bhandari, a right arm fast medium bowler from Delhi," ICC said in a release.

According to the rules of the tournament, countries can seek replacements on medical or exceptional grounds and a player replaced can not take any further part in the championship.

It was clear that Balaji would not be able to take part in the event after he suffered an abdominal strain during practice and the Indian Cricket Board had announced that the Delhi bowler would be his replacement.

BCCI Secretary SK Nair on Monday informed reporters in Chennai that Bhandari was already on his way to England.
