Ranojoy Mukerji profiles an optometrist who loves collecting Mercedes as a hobby!

Vipin Buckshey has class. We are talking about the latest Mercedes E-class, the E240. But then this is not the only car, the doctor has he owns six Mercs of every type, starting with a 1938 170V, the car that has been acknowledged to have rescued the company from imminent disaster, to the latest E-class. How did Buckshey start this unusual collection? I have always been interested in cars and since childhood I wanted to own new Mercs. This dream came true when I bought the brand new E-class.

Buckshey is an optometrist and a contact lens specialist. He has been advisor to the past five Presidents of India on eye care and was awarded a Padmashree for his efforts in 2000. Quite an achievement for an individual who started by working for another person in 1977 and has since worked his way up.

So are these cars the only vehicles he owns? I have owned a number of cars. I began by owning a Premier Padmini in 1980. I still own a 1929 Austin 7, that is another car I like a lot, he says. Buckshey is always on the lookout for vintage cars, though if he had his way, he would collect only Mercs. I have seen a few vintage cars that people want to sell, but when everyone describes a ‘superb condition’ car, it actually means that the car is in a bad shape, he says.

So what next? I want to buy a S-Class, he quips.
