Thank the lord that India is a big country. Which is why we have each tourist spending more time — and therefore more money — in India than in France or Singapore. Also, thank the lord that India is a country with immense variety. Which is why unlike China, different parts of India appeal differently to travellers. After all, how different can Nanjing get from Chengdu for the tourist carrying his Rough Guide China? Whereas, as every boffin knows, Thiruvananthapuram and Udaipur could have been on two different continents. So, big size and big variety — in other words, Incredible India! — gets this country to take more money out of each tourist’s pocket than the more famous holiday destinations in the world.

But hold on. Before you exchange that Club Med holiday for the Sita Travel one, know that what the World Tourism Organisation figure is stating is the average of Rs 65,085 that every tourist has to shell out for coming and staying awhile in India. The number of tourists coming to India pales when compared to smaller countries like Singapore or Thailand. And as for what the average traveller has to go through in India, one good look at the international airports in our metros — not to mention the obstacle course of touts and other nefarious members of the Indian tourism ‘grey market’ — should prick our balloon.

It is one thing to be happy about the Richard Branson types leaving behind hefty tips and signing guest books with superlatives. It’s quite another for the less endowed tourist to go back home in culture shock, talking about harassment, etc. — even after spending some Rs 65,085 during the trip.
