Indian hockey team make fresh appeal

A seven-member jury of the organising committee would give a verdict on Sunday on whether to allow the goal that gave New Zealand the win in Saturday's men's hockey match against India after the Asian nation made a fresh appeal against the decision of Tournament Director Wiert Doyer.

According to secretary of the Indian Hockey Federation K Jothikumaran, who is also treasurer of the country's Olympic contingent here, the Indians have appealed against the decision of Doyer of the Netherlands, who had dismissed their protest against the award of a penalty corner to New Zealand under controversial circumstances.

"We have already deposited 500 Euros again and hope to get the verdict by tomorrow," Jothikumaran said.

But even if the jury gives its decision in favour of India, its unlikely to be of any help to the side in its quest for a semifinal berth.

A win in the final match against Argentina on Monday would not be enough for them as both Holland and Australia are already through to the last four stage with nine and ten points respectively.

Meanwhile, Deepak Thakur, who was rushed to the hospital immediately after the match for a chest injury, is stated to be out of danger.

"Thakur is out of danger. But he will remain in the ICU for sometime as a precautionary measure," Jothikumaran said.
