The arrests came after a custodial judge in the town issued arrest warrants for 10 people suspected of regularly smuggling illegal immigrants across to Britain, the court reported on Wednesday.

No further details were made available about the arrests.

The would-be immigrants from India, Pakistan and Afghanistan had to pay up to 6,000 euros ($7,130 dollars) for the journey. They were packed into lorries in car parks along Belgium's motorways.

"The gang transported several dozen people to Britain practically every day," a judicial spokesman said.
