Former BJP President K Jana Krishnamurthy died on Tuesday after a prolonged illness. The 79-year-old leader, who also served as a Law Minister in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Government for some time, took over as BJP chief after the unceremonious exit of Bangaru Lakshman in the wake of the Tehelka scam.

However, his term ended abruptly in a year when LK Advani’s supporter M Venkaiah Naidu got appointed as the BJP president. He was later given a Cabinet berth.

Condoling his death, Vajpayee said the party had lost a dedicated, cultured and dynamic leader. He was among the leading partymen who contributed towards laying the foundations of Jan Sangh and the BJP in the south, he recalled.

Leader of Opposition LK Advani, BJP chief Rajnath Singh, senior leader M Venkaiah Naidu and Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi will attend his cremation in Chennai on Wednesday.
