Jayalalithaa told to appear in court in tax case

While a Chennai court ordered Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa to appear before it on April 10, a Bengaluru court exempted her to be present physically for next hearing due to security reasons.

In Bengaluru, Amma has a disproportionate assets case registered against her while in Chennai, a case related to non-filing of I-T returns is being heard.

In Chennai, Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate at Egmore court, R Dakshinamurthy ruled that “no more petition for non-appearance will be entertained.

“The Chennai case was filed by IT authorities against Jayalalithaa and Sasikala for non-filing of returns in 1991-92, 1992-93.

The court had directed the duo to appear on April 3, which they failed to do citing reasons of pre-occupation with political work.

Sasikala had pleaded, through her counsel, of ill health – sugar and back pain and requested exemption. She was also asked to appear on April 10 for next hearing.
