World champion Jerome Young failed to qualify for the Games at Athens. In July he had tested positive for the banned drug EPO, which might cost the US relay team its gold medal from the Sydney Olympics.
He had come to the spotlight at the 2003 World Championship where he clocked 44.50 seconds in the 400m final to cause a major upset and winning his first individual gold medal in a grand way.
