In yet another incident of crime against women in Jharkhand, a class VIII student was allegedly raped by a mason in her home in Ichak on Saturday, barely a week after the alleged gang-rape of a class XI student.
What is more shocking is the fact that family-members are allegedly trying to settle the issue by agreeing to drop the case if the accused agrees to marry the victim. The development was in sharp contrast to the landmark judgement on August 28 when the Supreme Court had made it clear that promise of marriage could not lessen the gravity of the offence.
Sources said some people of the community are trying to arrange the marriage between the victim and the accused, who is said to be absconding.
A case has been lodged at Ichak police station of Hazaribagh district.
According to the FIR, Md Sahjad, who is a mason by profession, was involved in construction work along with his brother-in-law Md Akhtar at Ichak, close to the house of victim.
On Saturday noon when the victim was alone in her house, Md Sahjad forcibly entered the house and raped her.
When her mother came home in the evening, the victim informed her about the incident. Her mother then contacted her father who is working in Kashmir. On Sunday, the mother contacted local leaders Bateshwar Prasad Mehta, Ashok Kapardar and others who then lodged an FIR at the Ichak police station.
On Monday, medical tests were carried out at Hazaribagh though the results were not available till now.
Last week, a class 12 student was allegedly gang-raped by four men, including the son of a deputy superintendent of police, over two days, sending shockwaves throughout the state.
