Joy

India had its moments of undiluted joy as well. India's cricket tour to Pakistan, historic to begin with, was converted to delirious joy this side of the border as India scored comprehensive victories in both forms of the game. An Olympic silver medal, again historic, followed in late summer and the first 300 plus score in capped a fairly good sporting year.

A death is not usually an occasion for common joy, but Sandalwood don Veerappan's death was one such rare occasion. Lakshmi Mittal became the undisputed steel czar, a rare Indian achievement in global business. Social sectors were not far behind, with Arundhati Roy bagging one of the world's most important peace prizes and Swami Agnivesh getting the Right Livelihood Award.
Not to forget, Ashutosh Gowariker will be able to vote for Shwaas as he became the only Indian besides Bhanu Athaiya as a voting member for the Academy Awards.
