The incident spread panic in ward number nine of the Nehru Hospital attached to the medical college on Saturday night. Medical college principal Dr OP Singh asked the district administration to make security arrangements at the emergency wards. He blamed the attendants for the incident.
According to reports, Udaibhan Singh of Mahavir Chhapra village, under Belipar police station, was a patient of acute asthma.
He was brought to the emergency ward of the hospital in a critical condition. He was shifted to bed number 31 of ward number 9 for further treatment. His attendants Shriprakash Singh, Rahul Singh, Mantu and two daughters Indrawati and Urmila were with him.
Trouble began around 11.30 pm when Urmila Singh contacted the nurse on duty and asked her to give an injection to her father. Sources said the nurse became angry due to repeated reminders. This led to a heated exchange. Soon afterward, the nurse informed junior doctors about the incident.
About a dozen junior doctors, armed with sticks and rods, entered ward number 9 and started beating up Shriprakash, Rahul and Mantu, causing serious injuries. When Urmila and Indrawati tried to intervene, the junior doctors did not hesitate to attack them.
However, medical college authorities claimed that attendants of the patient were drunk.
Following the incident, medical police post incharge Jaivardhan Singh rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
