After Germany's victory in the 1954 World Cup, the stadium was renamed after the Captain of the winning team, Fritz Walter.

The old Kaiserslautern stadium has been renovated many times since its first construction in 1920. After Germany's victory in the 1954 World Cup, the stadium was renamed after the Captain of the winning team, Fritz Walter.

The latest modifications were made especially for the 2006 World Cup. It includes enlargement of southern and western stands, reconstruction of the northern stand to accommodate a media and a VIP tower.

The Fritz-Walter stadium is home to 1.FC Kaiserslautern.
