Kalmadi was asked to submit his resignation to Congress president and chairperson of the CPP, Sonia Gandhi. The resignation was accepted with immediate effect.
When the allegations first surfaced, the Congress was quick to leave Kalmadi to fend for himself, maintaining those found guilty would be punished. Several agencies, including the Enforcement Directorate, the Central Vigilance Committee and the CBI are looking into allegations of corruption surrounding the Games.
